08Blog for Cash, Report for Free
Filed in: CPA Marketing, Health, Internet Marketing, List Building, PPC, ReviewPress, SEO, Social marketing by Emmanuel Mba on 11-08-09Every year since 2004 the website Technorati has published a report which tracks the trends and growths across the blogging community called the ‘State of the Blogosphere ’. The recently released 2009 report confirms that while “more bloggers than ever are making money from blogs” the actual methods by which they do it appear to be as varied as the topics that they blog about.
According to Lijit, between 2008 and 2009 there has been a 68% increase in the number blogs with ad tags installed. Without doubt, monetizing a quality blog is still a goal that publishers are striving to achieve. It's clear though that ad revenue isn't the whole picture.
Across the groups who make money from blogging, being a speaker at an industry event or contributing to print media is likely to contribute more to the bottom line than the monthly cheque from Google.
So if highly paid jobs in the “traditional” print media are become scarcer and few bloggers are getting rich on advertising revenues – where’s the money?
A role is emerging for semi-professional bloggers who earn an income as the conduit between their various specialty interests and the more traditional media.
In journalism the pillars of connectedness (to community) and competence are vital. Professional newsrooms without doubt have high levels of competence, where they are finding things difficult is in the area of "hyper-local" communities. In the case of Citizen Journalists it is the opposite.
Enter the pro-blogger. Able to generate and then orchestrate input from niche communities and then in a curatorial role, act as a journalist 'processor" and review and channel the content.
So professional bloggers can make sure that the quality control requirements are met and the professional newsrooms can keep a lid on costs by crowdsourcing stories.
Armed with quality, specialised content “hyper-local” advertising can be targeted and a model for pro-am journalism begins to take shape.
Without a doubt, if you work in the professional media or you consider yourself a "citizen journalist" who wants to derive a regular income from blogging - as the Chinese say, we live in teresting times.
